Array and Diversity Gains of an RF-AAA used on MIMO Receiver

We implemented an RF-adaptive array antenna (RF-AAA) on a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) receiver using Alamouti’s scheme. A new criterion maximizing the squared Frobenius norm of the MIMO channel matrix is proposed for controlling the RF-AAA. Computer simulation showed that a 2× 2 MIMO system with a 2-element RF-AAA implemented using Alamouti’s scheme provided an array and a greater diversity gain and lower bit error rate (BER) performance than a 2 × 4 MIMO system with maximum likelihood decoding (MLD) in both low and high correlation scenarios with MIMO channels.
